QI POPULATION HEALTH

As the healthcare system transitions towards value-based care (VBC), we have new and unprecedented opportunities to offer learning experiences to residents in quality improvement and patient safety. The 3-year, longitudinal quality improvement/patient safety curriculum balances didactic/knowledge-based activities with experiential learning. Each resident will be guided through developing a quality improvement project with their peer team, which includes running PDSAs and using data analysis to monitor improvement. At the conclusion of each academic year, teams present the results of the projects in the form of a presentation and storyboard. Some examples of storyboards can be seen here.

In addition to the training in quality improvement and patient safety, residents have the opportunity to learn principles and practices in population health management, including strategies for addressing the health of populations, the cost of health care, and the patient care experience. Residents will learn how to assess social needs in their patients and utilize community resources, such as public health departments and social service entities to make linkages to these resources.

As part of the scholarly activity curriculum, each PGY-2 resident will be mentored through the process of developing a journal club presentation by our pharmacy faculty and quality improvement specialist. Program leaders will assist the residents in reviewing the current literature and developing skills in evaluating content in order to improve patient care by incorporating evidence into practice.
